Things to Know About Flooring Installation

Before ordering or installing floorboards, it’s important to consider a few key factors — such as wood species, profile, finishing options, transportation and installation methods. Careful planning helps ensure the flooring you choose meets both your aesthetic preferences and long-term durability needs.

You can take a look of Puidukoda’s full flooring installation manual here.

Ordering Wooden Floorboards

Either pine or spruce floorboards can be ordered. When making your choice, give the visual differences primary consideration.

A pine wood floor has a reddish tone and darker, larger knots that become even darker over time.

Spruce floors are lighter in colour, with smaller, less visible knots and the wood gradually takes on a more yellowish tone over time.

Choosing the Right Floorboard Profile

Puidukoda offers different flooring profiles made from spruce and pine. Both spruce and pine floorboards are available with a moisture content of 12% or 16%, and can be ordered with bevelled edges or with sharp corners (without bevel). End matching is possible upon request.

Newly installed unfinished Puidukoda floorboards must be sanded to minimize imperfections and to prepare the floorboards for finishing. We recommend carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions for the finishing product you choose.

Why Choose Industrially Finished Floorboards: Pros, Cons, and Key Considerations

High-Quality Factory Finishing

Floorboards with an industrially applied variety of finishes can be ordered from Puidukoda. The manufacturing process takes place in controlled indoor facilities, free from dust and maintained at a consistent temperature and humidity level.

Finishes are applied according to the manufacturer’s technical requirements and to the correct thickness, using finishing systems approved by the coating producer.

This ensures a high-quality, durable and long-lasting result.

Cost Efficiency and Time Savings

In terms of price, factory-finished floorboards are more affordable than do-it-yourself options.

Manufacturers benefit from bulk purchase discounts and lower labour costs due to efficient mechanized production.

While DIY finishing may seem cheaper initially, it involves purchasing varnishes, stains, and tools, preparing a workspace, and allowing for drying time — which often results in higher overall costs and longer project times.

Limitations and Minimum Order Quantities

There are a few considerations when ordering factory-finished boards.

Minimum quantity: Economically, it makes sense to coat at least 100 m² of floorboards using one product. Smaller quantities are more time-consuming and expensive to produce.

Finish options: The available finishes are varnishes, tinted varnishes, and wood stains. Factory-oiled floorboards are not available from Puidukoda.

Drawbacks of On-Site Finishing

When applying the surface coat yourself, it’s difficult to achieve an even, stable drying process and consistent appearance.

The lifespan of a hand-finished floorboard is not guaranteed, as controlling the varnish thickness and drying times can be challenging.

If insufficient time is allowed between varnish coats, the lower layer may remain too wet, preventing proper adhesion of the topcoat — leading to peeling or premature wear.

Ready-to-Install Floorboards

A floorboard finished at Puidukoda is a ready-to-install product requiring no additional work after installation. Customers can choose between:

  • Colourless or transparent varnish
  • Tinted finishes in the desired tone (stain + varnish)

Varnish-coated floors are more resistant to wear, easier to clean, and provide superior protection against UV radiation, mold and rot.

Options include transparent, silky, or glossy finishes, and tinted varnishes selected from the glaze colour catalogue.

Colour Tone Selection Tips

Choose your colour tone carefully. The colour shown on printed charts may differ from the actual finish, as glossiness and light reflection vary between paper and wood.

If you want complete accuracy, request sample pieces coated with the actual product colour.

Note that greater differences may occur if the selected tone is not from Teknos’s official colour catalogue.

How to Transport and Store Floorboards Safely

Transport and Handling of Floorboards

Puidukoda packages the product into bundles designed to be lifted from one side using a forklift. If trucks or containers are backloaded, there is a high risk of damage to the package or the goods inside.

To prevent damage during transport, the use of a forklift is strongly recommended when handling goods in the original Puidukoda packaging.

If a crane with slings is used to load the goods, special harnesses designed for wood packages must be used. When using slings, place a rigid metal or wooden crossbar between the slings and the container to prevent the slings from cutting into the corners of the package and deforming the wood — particularly the tongues and grooves of siding boards — due to pressure.

Although the original packaging is covered with weatherproof plastic film, transport vehicles with enclosed compartments should still be used to protect the goods.

Proper Storage of Wooden Floorboards

It is highly advisable to store floorboard packages indoors. If this is not possible, the boards may be stored outdoors only under a roof, in a ventilated place protected from the elements.

When storing the material on the construction site, examine the film covering the stack and make sure that it has no holes or other damage that may have occurred during storage, loading or transport. If the film is broken, it should be repaired or replaced with a new one.

When storing the stack outdoors, cover the top and all four sides to prevent moisture from entering and to protect the material from UV radiation.

Leave sufficient airspace under the stack by using base supports—the material must never be in direct contact with the ground. The recommended airspace is about 150 mm.

Wood Floor Installation Instructions

Before installation, the packaged floorboards must adjust to the indoor climate of the premises for at least 14 days, allowing the material to acclimate to the same moisture conditions as the indoor environment. After a minimum of two weeks, the acclimatized wood can be installed.

If floorboards are installed under conditions that differ significantly from the room’s moisture level, cracks and tension may occur between the boards. The relative humidity in the room before, during and after installation must remain between 35–60%.

It is not advisable to install wooden floorboards on a heated subfloor, as the elevated surface temperature significantly increases the risk of shrinkage and cracking during the heating season.

Methods for installing floorboards

Wooden flooring is fastened to a subfloor, joists, or the beams of the ceiling below it. The installation surface must be level, with a maximum deviation of ±2 mm per 2 metres.

When fastening floorboards to joists and beams, the spacing between the joists must correspond to the thickness of the floorboards.

For a 28 mm thick floorboard, the joists should be spaced approximately 400 mm apart, with a maximum distance of 600 mm. For a 40 mm thick floorboard, the joists should be installed approximately 600 mm apart, with a maximum distance of 900 mm.

Fastening devices and fastening

Screws should be used to install wood flooring. Screws allow for easier adjustments to the position of the floorboards and make dismantling simpler if needed.

Always use screws specifically designed for flooring installation, where the threaded part penetrates only the joist to ensure proper fastening and stability.

Connecting Floorboard Ends, Corners, and Expansion Joints

Because wood is a natural material, it expands as moisture levels rise and shrinks when they decrease. For this reason, solid wood flooring should be installed with sufficient expansion space between the boards and all walls or fixed objects — at least 10 mm of clearance is recommended.
